Thyroid ultrasound + consultation

Thyroid ultrasound + consultation

Thyroid ultrasound with a consultation — for nodules, an enlarged gland, and follow-up of hormonal disorders.

The thyroid gland sits at the front of the neck and controls metabolism through its hormones. Ultrasound shows its size, structure, and blood flow.

The scan detects nodules, cysts, enlargement of the gland, and changes typical of thyroid inflammation. For any nodules found, their size and appearance are described, which forms the basis for deciding whether follow-up alone or further work-up is needed. It is recommended for neck swelling, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, unexplained weight loss or gain, fatigue, a fast heartbeat, or abnormal hormone results.

The examination is performed lying down with the neck gently extended, and is painless. A consultation is included — the findings are explained and the next steps agreed.

Preparation

No special preparation is needed and you may eat normally. Bring your latest hormone results (TSH, T3, T4) and any previous ultrasound reports — comparison with an earlier scan is key to following nodules over time. Avoid necklaces and tight collars.
