Spirometry with therapy

Spirometry with therapy

A lung function test performed by breathing into a device — for cough, breathlessness, asthma, and COPD.

Spirometry shows how much air your lungs can hold and how fast you can breathe it out. These are the core figures for detecting and following airway disease.

The test detects the airway narrowing seen in asthma and COPD, measures how severe it is, and shows whether treatment is helping. Where needed, the test is repeated after inhaling a medicine that opens the airways — a significant improvement points to reversible narrowing, typical of asthma.

You breathe into a mouthpiece with a clip on your nose, following instructions: a deep breath in, then the hardest and longest breath out you can manage. The test is repeated several times to take the best attempt, so your maximum effort matters — the result depends directly on it.

Preparation

Do not smoke for at least an hour before the test, and avoid a heavy meal and strenuous activity immediately beforehand. Wear clothing that does not restrict your chest. If you use an inhaler, ask your doctor whether to take it before the test — for some assessments it is paused, so always bring your medication with you.
