Peripheral vascular Doppler ultrasound
Doppler examination of the arteries and veins in the arms and legs — for pain when walking, swelling, and suspected thrombosis.
Ultrasound and color Doppler are used to examine the blood vessels of the limbs and measure the flow through them.
The arterial scan shows narrowing and plaque that reduce circulation — a typical cause of leg pain when walking that eases with rest, cold feet, or wounds that heal poorly. The venous scan detects clots, varicose veins, and failing venous valves, which show up as swelling, heaviness in the legs, or changes in skin colour.
The examination is performed lying down, and the venous part sometimes standing, since some changes are only visible under load. The probe with gel is moved along the skin and is not painful. When deep vein thrombosis is suspected, the examination is urgent and the findings are given immediately.

Preparation
No special preparation is needed. Wear clothing that is easy to roll up or remove to the hip or shoulder. Take your regular medication and bring any previous vascular reports if you have them.
