Carotid artery Doppler ultrasound
Ultrasound of the neck arteries that measures blood flow to the brain and detects plaque on the artery walls.
The carotid arteries are the neck vessels that supply the brain with blood. Ultrasound and color Doppler show their interior and measure the speed of flow through them.
The scan detects atherosclerotic plaque, wall thickening, and narrowing of the vessel — changes that increase the risk of stroke. It is therefore recommended for dizziness, transient neurological symptoms, a murmur over the carotid artery, and for people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a smoking history.
You lie on your back with your head turned slightly to the side. The probe with gel is moved along the neck. The examination is painless and involves no radiation. The findings are interpreted immediately and, where needed, a recommendation for further follow-up or treatment is given.

Preparation
No special preparation is needed. Take your regular medication. Avoid high collars and necklaces so the neck is accessible. Bring any previous reports and recent laboratory results if you have them.
