Ultrasound of the breasts and soft tissue — for a palpable lump, pain, and routine checks, without radiation.
Breast ultrasound shows the internal structure of the tissue and helps distinguish a fluid-filled change (a cyst) from a solid lesion that needs further work-up.
It is recommended for a palpable lump, pain, changes to the skin or nipple, and for discharge. In younger women, breast tissue is denser and ultrasound often gives a clearer picture than mammography, making it the first choice. In older women it complements mammography rather than replacing it. The same technique is used for soft tissue — lumps, lymph nodes, and changes beneath the skin.
The examination is painless, involves no radiation, and is short. It covers both breasts and the armpits. You receive the findings and a recommendation for follow-up immediately.

Preparation
No special preparation is needed. If you are of reproductive age, the best time is the first half of your cycle, when the breasts are less tender. Bring any previous ultrasound or mammography reports — comparison with an earlier scan matters. Wear an upper garment that is easy to remove.
